Diversity and Inclusion Seminar Series | Dr Mandy Henningham
This November, SSPS is holding a four-part “Diversity and Inclusion Seminar Series” every Tuesday at 12:00pm-1:00pm via Zoom (link below)
The Seminar Series is designed to showcase the great work around social inclusion diversity that is taking place in SSPS. There will be a short 30-minute presentation followed by questions. This is a brown-bag series so please feel free to eat! If there are any questions, please contact Diversity and Social Inclusion Coordinator, Chris Pepin-Neff at chris.pepin-neff@sydney.edu.au.
Third seminar presenter: Dr Mandy Henningham
Indigenous queer people often experience a conflict in identity, feeling torn between long-standing cultures and new LGBTIQA+ spaces. This autoethnography uses narrative analysis to explore the challenges of living between Indigenous and queer worlds as well as the difficulties in gaining acceptance from multiple cultures.
This discussion uses borderland theory to reflect the nuanced experiences of Indigenous queer people with identity and forefronts the impact of internalised phobias (homophobia, biphobia, and racism) and its impact on performative self-expression of sexual identity, self-sabotage, institutionalized racism and shadeism, and community acceptance, particularly for bi+ sexual identities.
